Engaging Other Views Within Evangelicalism – Advice from John Piper
Posted by danieljdoleys under ChurchLeave a Comment
Most are aware of the houpla from Dr. McKnight’s 2 posts on the “Neo-Reformed” and also those at Between Two Worlds. After engaging in the conversation the last few days, I remembered this video from Piper’s “Ask Paper John” series. I think Piper’s comments here are excellent. The video does not exactly answer all the questions, but I think it is a great place to start. Obviously non-Reformed people might not agree with his hope about influencing others to a fuller (or more Reformed view) of God’s sovereignty (but since I am broadly Reformed I would hope the same). However, I think the way Piper discusses the matter shows incredible wisdom, deeper care for pastoral ministry and honesty to one’s personal theological beliefs. I also love his definition of what a Reformed view of a worship service:
“A Reformed position mainly means, God is really big! Really strong! Really powerful! Really knowledgeable! Really great! Really weighty! He’s going to be really big in this service and we are going to make a big deal out of God here!”
That is why I love Reformed theology (and many other deeper and more involved reasons) and that is why I love John Piper!
